Corns & Calluses in Lemont, IL

Get Back On Your Feet With The Help of Our 5-Star-Rated Podiatrists

Did you know that corns and calluses, which are fairly common, are your body’s way of protecting your feet from blisters or open sores? Hard, dead skin builds up in response to increased pressure or friction which thickens and toughens the area and causes calluses to form – usually on the ball of the foot.  Corns, on the other hand, are mostly found on top of or between the toes. When the corn or callus becomes too thickened, increased pain and redness may result. If you’re suffering from corns and calluses in Lemont, IL, our expert podiatrists can help you heal!

What Causes Corns & Calluses?

The normal foot can typically carry a person’s weight comfortably. However, when corns and calluses develop, there can often be an underlying issue and structural changes in the toes and the ball of the foot can cause increased pressure within your shoes. When the long bones in the middle of the foot carry more weight than intended, a callus may form on the ball of the foot. Increased pressure on these bones can lead to a hammertoe. Also, as we age, we may lose the protective fat pad in the ball of the foot, and worsen the condition of the callus.

When hammertoes rub skin against the shoes or between the bones of adjacent toes, it can lead to corns. “Soft corns” are corns between the toes that retain moisture and do not get hard. In some cases, a small, inflamed, reddish pouch may develop that becomes more painful than the corn itself. This pouch is known as a bursa.

What Are the Treatment Options for Corns & Calluses?

Treatment options for corns and calluses depend on your symptoms and whether you have any other associated foot deformities. For mild discomfort from your corn or callus, the simplest solution is wearing wider, more comfortable shoes with enough room for the toes to move. These may include lower heeled shoes, softer leather, wider toe boxes, or even gym shoes. Use of a pumice stone to gently thin any corns or calluses may also provide some relief from symptoms.  Our podiatrists strongly advise against using a medicated corn pad or corn-removing product since these contain a strong acid that cannot differentiate between normal and thickened skin. This can lead to a chemical burn or an open sore that can become infected.

If you have tried these treatment options without finding relief or comfort, schedule a consultation with our podiatrist to discuss surgical options.
