Heel Pain (Plantar Fasciitis) Treatment and Care

Heel pain is most often caused by plantar fasciitis, a condition that is sometime called heel spur syndrome when a spur is present. Heel pain may also be a result of other causes, such as tendonitis, a stress fracture, arthritis, nerve irritation, or a cyst.

Since there are several possible causes, it is important to have heel pain properly diagnosed by our podiatrist. Our podiatrist is able to distinguish between all the possibilities and pinpoint the underlying source of your heel pain and provide the proper treatment. If you’re suffering from heel pain in Roselle, IL, keep reading to learn more!

Plantar Fasciitis, Explained

Plantar fasciitis is inflammation of the large band of tissue (the plantar fascia) that connects the heel to the toes. With this condition, the fascia becomes irritated and inflamed, resulting in heel pain.

What Are Some Causes of Heel Pain?

The most common cause of plantar fasciitis is faulty foot structure. For example, people who have arch problems such as overly flat feet or high-arched feet are more prone to developing plantar fasciitis.

Additionally, wearing non-supportive footwear on hard, flat surfaces puts excessive strain on the plantar fascia and can lead to plantar fasciitis. This is particularly evident when one’s job requires long hours on the feet. Obesity is another contributor to plantar fasciitis.

Heel Pain Symptoms

Some symptoms of plantar fasciitis are:

  • Pain on the bottom of the heel
  • Pain in the arch of the foot
  • Pain that increases over a period of months
  • Pain that is worse upon rising in the morning

People with plantar fasciitis often describe that the pain is worse when they get up in the morning or after they stand after sitting for a long period of time. After a few minutes of walking, the pain subsides. This is because walking stretches the plantar fascia, thus relieving pain. For some people, the pain may subside and return after spending long periods of time on their feet.

Treatments for Heel Pain

Non-Surgical Treatments

Treatment of plantar fasciitis begins with first-line strategies, which you can begin at home:

  • Stretching exercises. Stretching out the calf muscles can ease pain and assist with recovery.
  • Limit activity. Cut down on extended physical activity to give your heel a rest.
  • Shoe modification. Wear supportive shoes that offer good arch support and have a slightly raised heel. This will reduce stress on the plantar fascia.
  • Don’t go barefoot. When you walk without shoes, you put unnecessary strain and stress on your plantar fascia.
  • Medications. Oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, may be recommended to reduce pain and inflammation.
  • Apply ice. Putting an ice pack on your heel for 20 minutes several times a day helps reduce inflammation. Place a towel between the ice and your heel. Do not apply ice directly to the skin.

If you still have pain after several weeks of trying these methods, see our foot and ankle doctor at Weil Foot & Ankle Institute, who may add one or more of these treatment routines:

  • Strapping and padding. Placing pads in the shoe softens the impact of walking. Strapping supports the foot and reduces strain on the fascia.
  • Use night splints. Wearing a night splint allows you to maintain an extended stretch of the plantar fascia while sleeping. This can help to reduce the morning pain experienced by some patients.
  • Custom orthotics. Custom orthotic devices made to fit into your shoe can help correct the underlying structural abnormalities causing the plantar fasciitis.
  • Removable walking casts. A removable walking cast may be used to keep your foot immobile for a few weeks to allow it to rest and heal.
  • Injection therapy. In some cases, corticosteroid injections can be used to help reduce inflammation and relieve pain.
  • Physical therapy. Exercises and other physical therapy measures may be used to provide relief.

How To Know If Surgery Is Needed for Heel Pain

Although most patients with plantar fasciitis respond well to non-surgical treatment, a small percentage of patients have severe cases that require surgery. Surgery will be considered if you continue to have heel pain after several months of non-surgical treatment. Our foot and ankle surgeon will discuss the surgical options with you and determine which approach would be most beneficial for your condition.

Caring for Long-Term Heel Pain

No matter what kind of treatment you undergo for plantar fasciitis, the underlying causes that led to this condition may remain. Therefore, you will need to continue with preventive measures to ensure that heel pain doesn’t return. Wearing supportive shoes, using custom orthotic devices, and stretching are the mainstays of long-term treatment for plantar fasciitis.
