Compassionate Care for Your Foot Problems
What Are Neuromas?
A neuroma (Morton’s neuroma) is a benign condition that generally occurs in the small nerve that runs between the metatarsal bones in the ball of the foot and into the third and fourth toes. It usually arises when a nerve is irritated, resulting in inflammation of the nerve sheath or covering, and the possible formation of scar tissue around the nerve. Nerve irritation occurs from wearing improper shoes (too narrow of shoes or high heels), an injury, or a structural abnormality of the foot. What Are the Symptoms of Neuromas?
If you have pain in the ball of your foot that radiates into the toes or even up the foot to the heel or ankle, you may have a neuroma. Frequently, pain from a neuroma is described as burning, sharp, or tingling in nature. Patients often have trouble pinpointing the precise location of the pain and may complain about a general discomfort in the ball of the foot, or complain about feeling that their sock is bunched up under the foot. Activities that bend the foot—such as walking, running, and wearing high heels—or wearing tight shoes, further aggravate the symptoms. If the neuroma becomes large, you may also experience a “clicking” sensation or “lump” in the ball of your foot.
What Treatments Are Available for Neuromas?
In general, treatment for neuromas depends on the amount of discomfort or disability you are experiencing. Wearing shoes with shorter heels or trying wider shoes may be helpful in relieving symptoms, especially in the early stages. Ice applied to the bottom of the foot may also relieve the pain associated with a neuroma. If these conservative measures fail to relieve your symptoms, it may be time for a consultation with a Weil Foot & Ankle Institute podiatrist to discuss further options for your condition.
We were one of the first offices in the world to treat this condition with Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Therapy (EPAT), a non-invasive treatment that does not require immobilization or a disabling recovery. Find out if this treatment may work for you by contacting our podiatrists!
