Two Treatment Options for Plantar Fasciitis

flantarPlantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the plantar fascia—the ligaments that connect the front of the foot to the heel. It causes pain in the heel of the foot that most commonly occurs after exercising, while taking the first few steps in the morning, or after sitting for a long period of time.

While the pain may initially be mild, it can become quite bothersome and disruptive if left untreated. Weil Foot & Ankle Institute offers two progressive and highly effective treatment options for plantar fasciitis:

Extracorporeal Sound Wave Treatment (ESWT)

ESWT is a non-invasive procedure most commonly used for the treatment of soft tissue and bone disorders in the foot and ankle.

In the treatment of plantar fasciitis, an ESWT device is used to deliver shock waves to the affected ligaments in the foot. The shockwaves trigger natural repair mechanisms by increasing blood flow to the area, expediting the healing process. It is also thought that ESWT is helpful in breaking up the scar tissue that may build up around ligaments in the foot and exacerbate the symptoms of plantar fasciitis.

Depending on the severity of your plantar fasciitis, your doctor will recommend one of two different kinds of ESWT treatment: a one-time, high-energy shockwave treatment under anesthesia or a treatment of multiple, low-energy shockwaves without anesthesia.

ESWT has fewer side effects and a much shorter recovery time than surgical treatments for plantar fasciitis. In low-energy shockwave treatments, patients can resume normal activity immediately after the procedure. In high-energy treatments, patients are only asked to stay off their feet for the remainder of the day of the procedure. And nearly 90% of patients report significant pain relief within a week of undergoing the procedure, making ESWT a great, safe option for the treatment of plantar fasciitis.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)/Stem Cell Therapy

Another treatment option for plantar fasciitis is PRP/Stem Cell, the injection of platelet rich plasma into and around the area of injury in the foot.

Platelets initiate tissue repair by releasing growth factors that attract healing cells. In PRP/Stem Cell therapy, a small amount of blood is drawn from the patient. The platelets are then separated from the other substances in the blood and collected for injection into the affected area in the foot. This highly concentrated dose of healing platelets help speed up the repair process of the injured tissue and ligaments.

Patients who undergo PRP/Stem Cell therapy are asked to use crutches to avoid putting weight on the treated foot for about a week. Most patients report a significant decrease in pain within the first 10 days following treatment.

ESWT and PRP/Stem Cell therapy are two of the most highly effective, minimally invasive treatments for plantar fasciitis. If plantar fasciitis symptoms are especially severe, your doctor may recommend a combination of the two treatments for quicker results. If you are suffering from plantar fasciitis, speak with your doctor about which treatment options are best for you.
